State, Nation, and Nation-State Definitions
State
- Terms state, nation, and nation-state are often used interchangeably but have different meanings.
- Definition: A region controlled by a single political entity.
- Contains a permanent population.
- Has a defined territory.
- Possesses a government.
- Is sovereign, meaning it controls its internal affairs.
- Example: Ancient Greece
- Consisted of multiple city-states like Athens and Sparta, not a single state.
City-State
- Definition: A powerful city that controls its local surrounding territory.
- Examples:
- Ancient Athens and Sparta.
- Produced different governments and societies.
- Both were part of ancient Greece.
Nation
- Definition: A group of people who share some sort of background, such as culture, religion, or ethnicity.
- May not possess a strong political power, such as a government, that rules over the people.
- Larger but looser collection of people compared to a state.
- Example: American Indians
- Might organize into a nation of tribes.
- The territory of these tribes may not have a border.
- May not have a government.
