Special Senses
Definition: Receptor cells for special senses are found in special sensory organs.
Types of Special Senses:
Olfaction (Smell): Located in the olfactory epithelium in the nasal cavity.
Vision: Photoreceptor cells in the eyeballs.
Gustation (Taste): Gustatory receptors in the tongue (taste buds).
Equilibrium: Receptors for balance located in the inner ear.
Auditory Sensation (Hearing): Also located in the inner ear.
General Senses
Definition: Can be somatic or visceral, relating to pain, temperature, touch, tactile sensations, pressure, vibration, and proprioception.
Types:
Somatic Senses: External stimuli like pain and temperature.
Visceral Senses: Internal stimuli, less conscious awareness.
Sensation vs Perception
Sensation: Awareness of changes in internal/external environments; the sensory impulse reaches the primary somatosensory cortex.
Perception: Interpretation of sensation, includes localization and comparison with past sensations.
Sensory Pathway
Stimulation of Receptors: When a stimulus is applied, it stimulates receptors leading to transduction (conversion of stimulus to neural signals).
Graded Potential: Local potential that can lead to action potentials if threshold is reached.
Integration in CNS: Once the action potential reaches the CNS, it integrates into existing messages for analysis.
Sensory Modalities and Receptive Fields
Sensory Modality: Refers to different types of sensations like temperature, pain, touch, olfaction, etc.
Receptive Field: Area monitored by a receptor. A larger receptive field makes it harder to localize stimulus due to overlap between fields of different receptors.
Primary Somatosensory Cortex
Location: In the parietal lobe, organized map of body parts called the sensory homunculus.
Sensitivity: Greater area in cortex for parts with a high density of sensory receptors (e.g., fingertips, lips, tongue).
Less Sensitivity: Areas like the back have fewer sensory receptors.
Types of Sensory Receptors
Free Nerve Endings: Bare dendrites, involved in pain and temperature sensations.
Encapsulated Nerve Endings: Specialized endings include Meissner's corpuscles (touch) and Pacinian corpuscles (vibration).
Special Receptor Cells: Cells in organs such as the retina and inner ear.
Classification of Receptors by Location
Exteroceptors: Monitor external environment (skin sensations).
Interoceptors: Monitor internal environment (organs).
Proprioceptors: Monitor body position (in muscles and joints).
Types of Receptors by Function
Chemoreceptors: Respond to chemical concentrations (e.g., blood chemistry).
Nociceptors: Pain receptors that respond to tissue injury and extreme temperatures.
Thermoreceptors: Respond to temperature changes.
Mechanoreceptors: Respond to mechanical forces (pressure, touch).
Osmoreceptors: Respond to blood osmolarity changes.
Photoreceptors: Respond to light (in the retina).
Sensory Adaptation
Definition: Reduction in sensitivity to a constant stimulus over time.
Types: Adaptation can occur at peripheral receptors or central processing levels (cortex).
Fast-Adapting Receptors: Olfactory receptors, pressure receptors.
Slow-Adapting Receptors: Pain receptors and proprioceptors that remain active regardless of ongoing stimuli.
Tactile Sensations
Components: Include touch, pressure, vibration, tickle.
Associated Receptors: Meissner's corpuscles (soft touch), Merkel's discs (fine touch).
Comparison: Merkel's discs are more sensitive than Meissner's corpuscles.
Thermoreception
Location: Found in skin and internal organs (dermis, muscles, hypothalamus).
Types: Warm receptors (32-48 °C) and cold receptors (10-40 °C); extreme temperatures stimulate nociceptors.
Pain Sensation
Nociceptors: Free nerve endings; respond to tissue injury.
Types of Pain:
Acute Pain: Sharp, fast.
Chronic Pain: Dull, persistent.
Phantom Pain: Sensation perceived in an amputated limb.
Visceral and Somatic Pain
Visceral Pain: Originates in internal organs, harder to localize.
Somatic Pain: Originates from skin, muscles, and joints, easier to pinpoint.
Referred Pain: Pain felt in one part of the body due to injury/inflammation in another area (e.g., heart attack pain referred to left arm).
Proprioception
Definition: The sense of body position and movement.
Receptors: Muscle spindles, Golgi tendon organs, joint kinesthetic receptors.
Function: Provide feedback on muscle contractions and joint movements without adaptation.
