HLA Strategic Planning Meeting Notes

Tools, Resources, and Tips

  • Kimberly is a Miles per hour student from Pennsylvania and loves orange Skittles.

Meeting Agenda: Brainstorming for KPIs

  • Brainstorm to determine goals for the year and KPIs (Key Performance Indicators).
  • Examples:
    • Number of events in different categories.
    • Number of expert guests.
    • Graduate student exposure to jobs/internships.
  • Strategic plan will be filled in together before an August meeting.
  • The aim is to create a shared mission and drive.

Thoughts and Feelings About Goals for the Year

  • MBA Program Placement: Focus on getting MBA candidates into healthcare companies, specifically by increasing awareness of options.
  • MPA Program Growth: Despite placing the most graduates, there's anti-healthcare sentiment; aim to grow within the healthcare nonprofit sector.
  • Exposure to Various Aspects of Healthcare: Showing that healthcare isn't limited to hospitals; there are roles in corporate companies that build for them.
  • HLA Participation: Increase MBA participation in the HLA.
  • Networking: Exposing people to fields and connecting them with networks via internships.

Facilitating Connections

  • Facilitate connections through healthcare network exposure, leading to experiential opportunities.

Getting Professionals Involved

  • Incorporate professionals into activities for one-on-one networking opportunities.

Graduate Student Engagement

  • Graduate students are harder to engage due to commitments like marriage, kids, and jobs.
  • Most activities are in the evening, creating a barrier for some.
  • The type of activities is crucial; relevance to students' interests is key.
  • Consider targeted activities and different meeting times for graduate students, but this may conflict with existing structures.

Zoom Considerations

  • Recording and Zoom options have been discussed.
  • Britt prefers in-person to Zoom events.
  • Potential solution: Record events and share internally with graduate students.

Graduate-Focused Activities

  • Britt is open to graduate-focused activities.
  • Only 13% of attendees at HLA events last year were graduate students (approximately 10 people out of 80-90 attendees).

Career Advisor Lunches

  • Hold lunch events with career advisors to discuss job opportunities.
  • Club members can get to know each other in similar life stages.

CEO Lunches

  • CEO lunches could be exclusively for graduate students.
  • Execs from hospitals, medical device companies, etc., could host.
  • Students could sign up based on availability and location.
  • Include C-suite executives and product management roles.

Team Roles

  • James Mason: Operations.
  • Angel (
  • Volunteer Program: Undergraduates are paired with graduate students to help with grad school applications or networking.
  • Goal: Assist undergraduates in entering healthcare and enhance resumes.

Mentorship Program

  • Graduate students express concerns that assisting undergraduates is too much of an ask with little return as they're seeking their own jobs.
  • Discussion on whether a mentorship program (currently non-student focused) could be incorporated.
  • Kimberly proposes that graduate students could be connected to mentors outside the university.
  • Potential resource for undergraduates looking into OT, PT, or healthcare administration.

MBA Program Note

  • Reminder that MBA programs require two to four years of work experience before application.

Team Roles and Responsibilities

  • Matt: Marketing and Communications.
  • Katie: External Affairs (Guest Outreach, mentorship).
