Role of scientist in policy & politics
What role do scientists play in policy and politics?
Scientists can improve their knowledge for policy and decision-making through outreach activities. By clarifying and communicating science to the general public, scientists can foster a better understanding of complex issues, which ultimately helps inform and influence policy decisions.
The rise of social media gives the public easy access to scientific information. However, the credibility and validity of the information shared online can vary greatly, making it essential for scientists to engage in responsible communication and provide clear, accurate data to combat misinformation.
Politicisation of science= the systematic pursuit of knowledge as a means of bargaining, negotiating and compromising in pursuit of a desired outcome.
Why is it important?
Problems are issues that have no resolution or are difficult to resolve effectively due to conflicting views.
Scientists would often soften the actual problems, which many would justify as people's level of understanding of science is limited, thus if people are presented with more digestible information on such problems, then all could agree.
However, this would not make the situation any better; oftentimes, the ‘truth’ is not purely based on science, but rather on what question is being asked.
Sometimes science can be wrong.
What are the traits of a good science communicator? What kind of scientist has the greatest influence on policy?
There is a great impact an expert scientist has on decisions made by the government in solving such problems.
The type of scientist is very important

The four model roles of a scientist in policy and politics
• Pure Scientist – remain distant from the decision-making, guide decision-makers to sources of accurate information and theories
• Science Arbiter – stand by and stand ready to provide answers to questions by decision-makers
• Issue Advocate – active role in convincing decision-makers that particular decisions are better policies
• Honest Brokers or Policy Alternatives – make clear to the decision makers the full scope of options and consequences of policy choice
Who does the government trust when making a decision?
Honest Broker would be a more ideal choice as they provide objective analysis and present evidence-based recommendations, ensuring that all perspectives are considered in the decision-making process.
