11.5 What can you do to help prevent marine pollution?

(1) minimize your impact on the environment:

  • reduce amount of waste you generate

  • avoid using single-use plastics and styrogoam

  • stay clear of products w/ excessive packaging

  • support companies w/ good environmental records

  • use nontoxic or less hazardous products aorund house

  • conserve resources

  • reuse and recycle items

  • buy goods made of recycled materials

(2) seek and support creative solutions

  • instead of using plastic throw-away toothbrush, use one that has a replaceable head

  • use metal straws instead of plastic ones

  • compost

(3) become politically aware

  • many ocean-related issues come before the public and require a majority of voters to approve a proposal before it’s enacted into law

(4) educate yourself about how the ocean works
