- No real communication except most basic info with isolated words or formulae
- Great difficulty understanding spoken/written English
- 1 – Non-user
- Essentially no ability beyond a few isolated words
- 0 – Did not attempt
- No assessable information provided (absent, uses another language, or totally memorised answer)
Writing Task 1 – Band Descriptor Framework
- Four equally-weighted criteria, each graded 0–9:
- Task Achievement (TA)
- Coherence & Cohesion (CC)
- Lexical Resource (LR)
- Grammatical Range & Accuracy (GRA)
- A script must fully match the positive features at a level to be awarded that band.
- WHITE (negative) statements in the official tables highlight weaknesses that limit the rating.
1 Task Achievement (TA)
Band 9
- All task requirements fully and appropriately satisfied
- Extremely rare lapses in content
Band 8
- Covers all requirements appropriately, relevantly, sufficiently
- Academic: Key features skilfully selected, clearly presented, highlighted, illustrated
- GT: All bullet points clearly presented and appropriately illustrated/extended
- Only occasional omissions/lapses
Band 7
- Requirements covered; content relevant & accurate (few omissions/lapses)
- Format appropriate
- Academic:
- Selected key features covered & clearly highlighted (could be more fully/appropriately illustrated or extended)
- Clear overview; data categorised; main trends/differences identified
- GT:
- All bullets covered & clearly highlighted (could be more fully/appropriately illustrated or extended)
- Clear purpose; tone consistent & appropriate (minimal lapses)
Band 6
- Response focuses on task; appropriate format
- Academic:
- Selected key features covered & adequately highlighted
- Relevant overview attempted
- Information selected & supported using figures/data
- GT:
- All bullets covered & adequately highlighted
- Purpose generally clear with minor tone inconsistency
- Some irrelevant/inaccurate info in details or examples
- Some details missing/excessive; further extension/illustration needed
Band 5
- Generally addresses task; format may be inappropriate in places
- Academic: Key features not adequately covered; recounting mainly mechanical; may lack supporting data
- GT: All bullets presented but one or more not adequately covered; purpose may be unclear at times; tone variable/inappropriate
- Tendency to focus on detail without the bigger picture
- Inclusion of irrelevant/inaccurate material detracts from TA; limited detail when extending/illustrating points
Band 4
- Attempt to address task
- Academic: Few key features selected
- GT: Not all bullets presented; purpose not clearly explained/confused; tone may be inappropriate; format may be wrong
- Presented features may be irrelevant, repetitive, inaccurate, inappropriate
Band 3
- Does not address task requirements (possible data/diagram/situation misunderstanding)
- Presented features largely irrelevant
- Limited info, used repetitively
Band 2
- Content barely relates to task
Band 1
- ≤20 words: Band 1
- Content wholly unrelated; any copied rubric discounted
Band 0
- Absent, entirely memorised, or language other than English throughout
2 Coherence & Cohesion (CC)
Band 9
- Message followed effortlessly
- Cohesion never draws attention; lapses minimal
- Paragraphing skilfully managed
Band 8
- Message followed with ease
- Logical sequencing; cohesion well managed
- Occasional lapses
- Paragraphing sufficient & appropriate
Band 7
- Information/ideas logically organised; clear progression (few lapses)
- Range of cohesive devices (incl. reference & substitution) used flexibly, though some inaccuracy or over/under-use
Band 6
- Information/ideas generally arranged coherently; clear overall progression
- Cohesive devices used to good effect, but cohesion within/between sentences may be faulty/mechanical (misuse, overuse, omission)
- Reference/substitution may lack flexibility or clarity, causing repetition/errors
Band 5
- Organisation evident but not wholly logical; may lack overall progression, yet an underlying coherence present
- Ideas related but sentences not fluently linked
- Limited/overuse of cohesive devices with inaccuracy
- Writing repetitive owing to inadequate/inaccurate reference/substitution
Band 4
- Information/ideas evident but not arranged coherently; no clear progression
- Relationships between ideas unclear/inadequately marked
- Some basic cohesive devices used, often inaccurate/repetitive
- Inaccurate/lacking substitution or referencing
Band 3
- No apparent logical organisation
- Ideas discernible but difficult to relate
- Minimal use of sequencers/cohesive devices; those used may not indicate logical relationship
- Difficulty identifying referencing
Band 2
- Little relevant message or off-topic
- Little evidence of organisational control
Band 1
- ≤20 words or fails to communicate (virtual non-writer)
Band 0
- No attempt / non-English / fully memorised
3 Lexical Resource (LR)
Band 9
- Full flexibility & precision within task scope
- Wide vocabulary used accurately, appropriately; natural, sophisticated control
- Minor spelling/word-formation errors extremely rare; minimal impact
Band 8
- Wide resource used fluently & flexibly for precise meanings
- Skilful use of uncommon/idiomatic items when appropriate (occasional inaccuracies in choice/collocation)
- Occasional spelling/word-formation errors with minimal impact
Band 7
- Resource sufficient for some flexibility & precision
- Some ability with less-common/idiomatic items
- Awareness of style/collocation evident though inappropriacies occur
- Few spelling/word-formation errors, not detracting from clarity
Band 6
- Resource generally adequate & appropriate
- Meaning generally clear despite restricted range/lack of precision
- Risk-takers may show wider range but higher inaccuracy
- Some spelling/word-formation errors not impeding communication
Band 5
- Resource limited but minimally adequate
- Simple vocab used accurately, but little variation
- Frequent lapses in appropriacy; flexibility lacking (simplifications/repetitions)
- Spelling/word-formation errors noticeable; may cause difficulty
Band 4
- Resource limited & inadequate/unrelated to task; vocabulary basic & repetitive
- Possible use of memorised/ formulaic language or over-dependence on input material
- Inappropriate word choice / word-formation / spelling errors may impede meaning
Band 3
- Inadequate resource (often underlength); heavy dependence on input or memorised language
- Very limited control of word choice/spelling; errors predominate; severe impediment
Band 2
- Extremely limited resource; few recognisable strings except memorised phrases
- No control of word-formation/spelling
Band 1
- ≤20 words or only isolated words
Band 0
- No resource apparent; non-English, absent, or memorised
4 Grammatical Range & Accuracy (GRA)
Band 9
- Wide range of structures with full flexibility/control
- Appropriate grammar & punctuation throughout
- Minor errors extremely rare; minimal impact
Band 8
- Wide range flexibly & accurately used
- Majority of sentences error-free; punctuation well managed
- Occasional non-systematic errors/inappropriacies; minimal impact
Band 7
- Variety of complex structures with some flexibility & accuracy
- Grammar/punctuation generally well controlled; frequent error-free sentences
- A few persistent errors not impeding communication
Band 6
- Mix of simple & complex sentences; limited flexibility
- Complex structures less accurate than simple ones
- Grammar/punctuation errors occur, rarely impeding communication
Band 5
- Limited, repetitive range of structures
- Complex sentences attempted but faulty; greatest accuracy in simple forms
- Frequent grammatical errors causing some reader difficulty
- Punctuation may be faulty
Band 4
- Very limited range; subordinate clauses rare; simple sentences dominate
- Some accurate structures, but frequent errors may impede meaning
- Punctuation often faulty/inadequate
Band 3
- Sentence forms attempted, but grammar/punctuation errors predominate (except memorised or copied phrases)
- Meaning mostly blocked; length may be insufficient for evidence of control
Band 2
- Little/no evidence of sentence forms (except memorised phrases)
Band 1
- ≤20 words; no rateable language
Band 0
- No attempt / non-English / memorised
Practical & Ethical Considerations
- Memorisation: Any answer proven to be totally memorised = Band 0.
- Copied rubric is discounted from the word count.
- Assessors must match positive features and note limiting (white-text) features.
- Script length
- Half-bands are awarded in the overall score by averaging the four criteria, e.g. 47+6+6+6=6.25→6.5 (rounded up to nearest 0.5).
Inter-criterion Connections & Strategy Tips
- High TA often correlates with strong CC (clear overview/ logical organisation).
- LR & GRA often interact: risk-taking with vocabulary/complex grammar can raise potential band but also increase error frequency—balance precision and accuracy.
- Tone (particularly in General Training letters) affects both TA (purpose) and LR (appropriacy of lexis).
- Excessive detail without overview (Academic) limits TA and CC.
- Over-reliance on fixed phrases can lower LR and potentially mark script as memorised (ethics risk).
Revision Checklist for Candidates
- Fulfil every bullet/key feature; provide clear overview/purpose.
- Organise ideas into logical paragraphs; use varied cohesive devices.
- Employ precise vocabulary; avoid repetition; check spelling/word formation.
- Use a range of sentence structures; proof-read for grammar/punctuation errors.
- Stay within the required word length (≥150 words for Task 1) but avoid unnecessary padding.
- Maintain appropriate formal/informal tone according to task type.
