Evolution 101
Evolution 101
Mechanisms:The Process of Evolution
Mutation
Mutations are random.
- If mutation is helpful, then the organism is more likely to survive and pass it on
- Not all mutations matter to evolution
Causes of mutation
- DNA fails to copy accurately
- External influences, such as radiation, create mutations
Gene Flow
- Migration from one location to another
- Long-term geological event that causes separation of populations
Sexual Reproduction
Genetic shuffling
- 50% from mother,50% from father
- Recessive Genes can be passed on and expressed in the offspring
Development of Organisms
- Process by which the genotype (genetic makeup) is expressed as a phenotype (trait)
- Environmental conditions select the traits that help ensure survival
Genetic Drift
- Pure chance that some organisms are killed or don’t survive
Natural Selection
There is a variation of traits
- A wide variety is needed
There is differential reproduction
- Not all organisms reproduce
This is heredity
- Organisms pass on traits, both dominant and recessive
End result-Survival of the fittest
- If the trait gives an advantage to the organism, that organism is more likely to survive and reproduce
