Fiber Optics Overview

Fiber Optic Cables

  • Fiber optic cables consist of a central core wrapped in layers for protection, covered with an outer plastic layer.

Connectors

  • Subscriber Connector (SC):
    • Push/pull design for ease of insertion and removal.
  • Local Connector (LC):
    • Smaller, similar to SC, allows for more cables in less space, commonly used for higher Internet speeds.

Internet Connection Types

  • Special Fiber Internet: Uses fiber links between subscriber premises and ISP.
    • Fiber to the Premises (FTTP): Full fiber link.
    • Fiber to the Curb (FTTC): Retains a copper segment between premises and street cabinet.

Transceivers

  • Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP):
    • Fiber optic transceiver module supporting duplex 1 Gbps (SFP) or 10 Gbps (SFP+) links.
    • Essential for communication between network components based on fiber optics.
