Fiber Optics Overview
Fiber Optic Cables
- Fiber optic cables consist of a central core wrapped in layers for protection, covered with an outer plastic layer.
Connectors
- Subscriber Connector (SC):
- Push/pull design for ease of insertion and removal.
- Local Connector (LC):
- Smaller, similar to SC, allows for more cables in less space, commonly used for higher Internet speeds.
Internet Connection Types
- Special Fiber Internet: Uses fiber links between subscriber premises and ISP.
- Fiber to the Premises (FTTP): Full fiber link.
- Fiber to the Curb (FTTC): Retains a copper segment between premises and street cabinet.
Transceivers
- Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP):
- Fiber optic transceiver module supporting duplex 1 Gbps (SFP) or 10 Gbps (SFP+) links.
- Essential for communication between network components based on fiber optics.
