Video Project and Editing Guidelines

Installing Adobe Suite

  • Access:
    • Students in the class can install the Adobe Cloud software using their Aurora accounts.
    • Only Adobe Premiere is necessary but other video editing software can also be used if preferred.
  • Installation Process:
    • Go to Adobe website.
    • Use your Aurora account for installation access.
  • Class Context:
    • The software is crucial for projects related to documentary-style editing.

Editing Project Overview

  • Project Timeline:
    • Class activities involve preparing for a video project in weeks 12-15.
    • By week 12, students should have a plan for their projects, conduct video exercises, and arrange to shoot footage and conduct interviews for their final projects.
    • Submission Deadlines:
    • Rough draft videos due: April 28.
    • Final project due: April 30 / May 1, at midnight (actual deadline).
  • Final Exam:
    • Scheduled for May 5 at 11:15 AM.
    • The exam will involve watching all class films and answering related questions.

Project Structure

  • Video Project Focus:
    • Students will create a narrative-based video story similar to the podcast project.
    • Must focus on a group unified by a common purpose (e.g. a club, business, team).
  • Execution and Responsibilities:
    • Groups should consist of 2-3 students to enable effective collaboration and division of responsibilities.
    • Clear roles should be established within each group:
    • Coordinator/Organizer/Producer
    • Technical Director/Editor
    • On-Camera Host
  • Interview Requirements:
    • Minimum three interviews with members of the chosen group, including:
    • One core interview with a pivotal group member.
    • Inclusion of B-roll footage to enhance interest and authenticity.
  • Collaborative Strategy:
    • Group work is essential; no student should work alone.

Assignments Breakdown

  • Podcast and Other Components:
    • Upon submission of the podcast, grading will follow on:
    • Writing package
    • Video project (50 points)
    • Participation and attendance (25 points)
    • Second exam (25 points)
  • Video Project Components:
    • Treatment and planning stage:
      • Overview of video content (subject and objectives).
      • Timeline outlining shooting schedule for group members.
    • Video Shooting:

Media Analysis Project

  • Analysis Preparation:
    • Students are to select a documentary film for analysis due on April 7.
    • Will include an overview discussion in class.
    • Students suggested to choose films relevant to their project topics.
    • Guidance on choosing suitable documentaries available on streaming platforms like Netflix or Amazon.

Production Process Stages

  • Video Production Phases:
    • Preproduction:
    • Critical planning involving script writing, coordinating interviews, location scouting, equipment preparation, etc.
    • Production:
    • Actual shooting phase.
    • Postproduction:
    • Assembly of footage, editing, incorporating audio and graphics.
  • B-roll Footage Definition:
    • B-roll is supplementary footage that enhances the primary narrative or visuals (interviews included) in video production.

Project Logistics and Coordination

  • Group Collaboration:
    • Regular attendance and contribution in class are crucial as the project develops.
  • Group Meetings:
    • Progress check meetings scheduled for April 21 and April 28 to assess project milestones.
    • Final project submission will be via a OneDrive folder link including both the main and short videos.

Final Deliverables and Evaluation

  • Final Project Submission:
    • Deliverables include the primary video and the short form video as one package.
  • Evaluation Criteria:
    • Grades will be based on the overall quality and components of both videos, as outlined in the evaluation rubric:
    • Short form video (10 points)

  • Final Exam Structure:
    • Involves viewing all projects and analytical discussions of peer's works based on provided questions related to their projects.
