Homework Requirements

  • Write at least five sentences during class or as part of homework.

    • Above these sentences, in bold, write Reflection.

    • Below that, in bold, write Additional Thoughts.

    • Before the next class, add at least three more sentences.

Reflection Guidelines

  • Today, at least two reflections are to be provided. Before the next class, additional thoughts need to be added for those reflections.

  • Utilize the current week for preparing next week's work due to light schedule.

Homework Overview

  • Knowledge checks need to be completed if not done yet.

  • Work on news items and new vocabulary should be done as well.

  • Make sure to add additional thoughts to the reflections as part of homework tasks.

Career Planning and Assessment Assignment Overview

  • Focus on the Career Portfolio for the next week’s assignment.

  • It is advised to complete this during the current week.

Accessing Career Resources

  1. Go to my IUP page.

  2. Click on View All Cards.

  3. In the Search Bar, type the word job (j-o-b).

  4. Locate Career and Professional Development section.

  5. For those who have not created a resume:

    • Click on Resume and Cover Letter Help for guidance on constructing a resume.

  6. For those who have a resume:

    • Review provided guidance to ensure the resume is effective.

Completing Focus Two Assignment

  • Scroll down to Focus Two: Major and Career Planning and click it.

  • Answer the initial three questions popped up in the little window and hit Submit.

  • Add your name to the form once it appears.

Career Planning Foundations

  • For this section:

    1. Assess how involved you are in the career planning process.

    2. Reflect on academic strengths and weaknesses (not directly part of the homework).

  • Focus will mainly be on Am I Career Ready? self-assessment.

Am I Career Ready Self-Assessment

  • This section contains eight competencies that employers seek in candidates:

    1. Critical Thinking

    2. Communication

    3. Teamwork

    4. Technology Knowledge

    5. Leadership Skills

    6. Professionalism

    7. Self-development

    8. Equity and Inclusion

  • Work through eight different pages with three questions each related to the competencies.

  • Be honest in self-evaluation to identify strengths and weaknesses.

Completing the Self-Assessments

  • For the homework:

    1. Complete Am I Career Ready? self-assessment.

    2. Complete three out of five types of self-assessments:

      • Work Values

      • Personality

      • Interests

      • Skills

    • These assessments are brief.

After Completing Assessments

  • Finish the assessment to get a results page marking your career readiness.

  • Understand your scores in comparison to the expected competencies from employers and recent graduates.

  • For each competency, check at least three methods to develop them over the next four years and describe experiences outside of class that contributed to those skills.

Homework Submission Instructions

  • Assessments should be submitted through D2L by the next week.

    • It is recommended to complete them either the same night or the following day to address any potential issues beforehand.

Additional Class Instructions

  • Students should note and record their reflections on their journal, using the proper structure:

    • At the top, write Reflection in bold.

    • Draw additional thoughts at the end and label them as bold as well.

    • Include today’s date in bold beneath the reflections.

Analysis of Reading Assignments

  • For the reading Reading the Ripper:

    • Focus on describing scenes and emphasizing reflections through peer discussions.

    • Analyze how different expertise levels can alter one’s perceptions of beauty or complexity in any scene.

Discussing Perspectives in Literature

  • Engage in conversations with peers about the perceptions of the sunset from Reading the Ripper.

  • Compare and contrast initial experiences of scenes versus interpretations after gaining expertise.

    • Collect collective examples from peers about lost beauty in various career paths or expertise.

Reflection on Changing Perspectives

  • Write about changes in perspective from beauty to utilitarian views in professions (i.e., how beauty can morph into professional careers).

  • Identifying varying interpretations of the same scenes/events among different individuals will be crucial learnings as well:

    • Think of examples, ideally personal or from literature, where dual perspectives can yield vastly different experiences or interpretations of the same scenario.
