Progressive Era – Era of increased government involvement/regulation (away from laissez-faire) to protect the welfare of the people (consumers); starts in response to problems caused by industrialization

Jacob Riis – Wrote How the Other Half Lives to show the living conditions of the urban poor

Jane Addams - Created a settlement house (Hull House) to help the urban poor

Frank Norris – Wrote The Octopus about farmers and their problems with railroads

Ida Tarbell – Wrote The History of Standard Oil about Rockefeller

Margaret Sanger – Created the Birth Control League that later became Planned Parenthood

Muckraker – Writer who exposes problems of society (corruption, poverty, etc.)  Ex. Upton Sinclair, Ida Tarbell

Theodore Roosevelt – President known for trust busting and conservation (protecting resources) who also arbitrated (made decision) and ended the Anthracite Coal Strike
