Definition of Sensation and Perception

  • Sensation: Activation of sense organs by physical energy from the environment.
  • Perception: The brain's interpretation and organization of sensory information.

Distinction between Sensation and Perception

  • Sensation: A physical process that occurs when sensory receptors detect stimuli.
  • Perception: A psychological process involving the interpretation of sensory input.

External Sensation Processes

  • Involves knowing material stimuli through the external senses, including:
    • Vision (Seeing)
    • Audition (Hearing)
    • Olfaction (Smell)
    • Gustation (Taste)
    • Cutaneous (Touch, Pain, Temperature, and Pressure)

Four Elements of External Sensation

  1. Stimulus: Any external influence affecting behavior. It can vary in intensity and type.
  2. Receptor: Specialized cells that detect and receive the stimulus.
    • Types of receptors:
      • Exteroceptors: On the body's external surface.
      • Proprioceptors: Located in muscles, joints, and tendons.
      • Interoceptors (Visceroceptors): Found in visceral organs.
  3. Transmitter: Nerve fibers transmitting sensory messages from one neuron to another.
  4. Center (Brain): Processes and interprets the sensory information.

Psychophysics

  • The study of the relationship between physical aspects of stimuli and psychological experiences.
Thresholds in Psychophysics
  1. Absolute Threshold:
    • The smallest intensity of a stimulus required for detection.
    • Examples:
      • Candle flame seen at 30 miles.
      • Tick of a watch heard at 20 feet.
  2. Difference Threshold (Just Noticeable Difference - JND):
    • The smallest detectable difference between two stimuli.
    • Represents the smallest change in stimulation perceived 50% of the time.

Visual Sense

  • Visual Stimulus: Starts with light, a form of electromagnetic radiation.
  • Visual Spectrum: Range of wavelengths sensitive to humans, includes colors from violet to red.
Parts of the Eye
  • Cornea: Protects the eye, contributes to light refraction.
  • Lens: Focuses light onto the retina.
  • Iris: Controls the size of the pupil.
  • Pupil: The opening for light entry.
  • Retina: Contains rods (for dim light) and cones (for color perception).
Process of Sight
  1. Light enters through the cornea, pupil, and lens.
  2. The image is reversed and cast onto the retina.
  3. Retina converts light energy into electrical impulses for the brain.

Visual Transmitters

  • Optic Nerve: Bundle of axons transmitting visual information to the brain.
    • Creates a blind spot where no photoreceptors exist.
Visual Pathways
  • Information processing flow: Retina → Optic Nerve → Optic Chiasm → Thalamus → Visual Cortex.

Visual Phenomena

  • Color Vision: Ability to distinguish colors, normal vision can differentiate 7 million colors.

Auditory Sense

Auditory Pathway

Auditory Receptors

Cutaneous Sense (Somatosensation)

  • Somatosensory Receptors: Include Merkel's Disks, Pacinian Corpuscles, and Free Nerve Endings.
Cutaneous Sensitivity
