Laing:

  • saw the family as one of the key sources of madness- schizophrenia → understanding diagnosed comes from exploring social context of their lives ( family life )

  • parents act as ‘ gangsters ‘→ strict rules are set and if broken there are consequences - a hierarchy

  • family is suffocating, emotional intensity -→ darker side of the family

Evaluation:

Parson - we need to focus on the support the family provides → socialise children + emotional support - value consensus remains within society.

Leach:

  • Describes modern family life like an overloaded electrical circuit → parents fight + children rebel.

  • The isolated nuclear family has been emotionally catastrophic
