Introduction
The hypodermis, also known as subcutaneous fascia (fat), is the third layer of the skin.
Location
Lies beneath the dermis and above fascia and muscle.
Functions
Shape: Gives the skin its shape.
Insulation: Acts as a thermal insulator.
Shock Absorption: Provides cushioning against impacts.
Nutritional Depot: Stores nutrients until needed.
Structure
Firmly attached to the lower surface of the dermis.
Loosely bound to underlying structures, allowing skin mobility.
Fat lobules surrounded by collagen fibers.
Supports vascular networks, lymph vessels, and nerves.
Absence in Thin Skin Areas
Not present in thin-skinned areas such as:
Eyelids
Nipples
Genitals
Shins
