= verbs made up of a simple verb and an adverb particle
* all adverb particles, except ‘away’, ‘back’, ‘out’, ‘forwards’, ‘backwards’ can also be used as prepositions
adverb particles change the meaning of the verb
prepositions belong with the objects following them
when a phrasal verb is followed by an object, the adverb particle can be put before or after the object - in case of a preposition, the object will always follow
