phrasal verbs

= verbs made up of a simple verb and an adverb particle

* all adverb particles, except ‘away’, ‘back’, ‘out’, ‘forwards’, ‘backwards’ can also be used as prepositions

  • adverb particles change the meaning of the verb

  • prepositions belong with the objects following them

when a phrasal verb is followed by an object, the adverb particle can be put before or after the object - in case of a preposition, the object will always follow
