RESISTANT BACTERIA

Because bacteria reproduces at such a fast rate, they can evolve rapidly.

Certain strains of bacteria are no longer killed by anti biotic, these bacteria have evolved and are now antibiotic-resistant.

MRSA one common strain of antibiotic resistant bacteria.

How anti resistant happens

. A mutation could make a bacterium resistant to antibiotics

. If we use an anti biotic and all of the bacteria are killed apart from the bacteria that’s resistant to antibiotics.

. So the antibiotic strain survived and reproduces without any competition from other bacteria

. Overtime the population of the resistant strain rises.

. The resistant strain now spreads bc people are not immune to it and there’s no effective treatment.

How to reduce the development of antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria

1) doctors should not prescribe antibiotics inappropriately. For e.g there’s no point of using antibiotics on a virus

2) patients should make certain to complete there course of antibiotics. Make sure all bacteria are killed and none survive to mutate and form certain strains.

3) restrict the use of antibiotics in farming.
