Colons and Semicolons
Overview of Colons and Semicolons
Semicolons
Function of Semicolons: Semicolons serve to combine two independent clauses, allowing a writer to construct a compound sentence.
Example: "Halloween is not my favorite holiday; I am a giant scaredy cat."
Colons
Using Colons to Introduce Lists:
Rule: Place a colon after an independent clause when you are introducing a list.
Correct Example: "The new restaurant offers the following menu items: pizza, pasta, calzones."
Incorrect Usage: "The new restaurant offers the following menu items, including: pizza, pasta, calzones."
This usage is NOT correct as it violates the structure required for colons.
Using Colons to Introduce Examples or Illustrations:
Rule: A colon can be used after an independent clause to introduce an example or illustration.
Example 1: "The old restaurant offers only one menu item: liver and onions."
Example 2: "The fire safety rules are taught to children for a very important reason: survival."
This demonstrates how to use a colon when introducing a direct quote in analysis writing.
