Project

A project is a temporary effort to create a product, service, or result. A project ends when its objectives are reached or it has been terminated.

A project:

  • Has a unique purpose for existing

  • Does not continue forever

  • Is developed using progressive elaboration

    • Project complexity and level of detail must increase gradually overtime

  • Use and require resources

  • Must have a primary sponsor that funds the project

  • Involves risk and uncertainty

Program

A program is a group of related projects managed in a coordinated way

Project and Program Managers

  • Project managers work with people involved in the project to meet project goals

  • Program managers oversee programs and exist above project managers.

Triple Constraint

Balanced by the project’s respective manager.

  • Scope goals: What work will be one?

  • Time goals: How long should it take to finish?

  • Cost goals: What should it cost?
