Disorders in History

  • conceptions of madness in the Middle Ages in Europe were a mixture of the divine, diabolical, magical, and transcendental

  • Madness or forms of physical disability was often seen as a moral issue, either a punishment for sin or a test of faith and character

Infantilization - the prolonged treatment of one who has a mental capacity greater than that of a child as though they are a child

Ableism - the discrimination and social prejudice towards people with disabilities with pretenses of those with disabilities to be needing of help

Physical Disorder

any disability which limits the physical function of one or more limbs

Mental Disorder

a combination of how a person feels, acts, or thinks. This may be associated with particular regions or functions of the brain or ret of the nervous system, within in a social context

Autism

  • extraordinary memory

  • struggle with eye contact

  • 1 in 88 have autism

caused by:

  • older dads

  • incidents in pregnancy

  • genetics

Characteristics:

  1. Social Interaction - many find relating to others difficult or even impossible (eye contact, touch…etc

  2. Communication - speech may be delayed, diminished or entirely absent

  3. Behaviours - may become obsessed with a. theme or object

  4. Response to Sensory Stimuli - reaction to sights, sounds, conversational buzz, crowds…etc
