3-2-1 Knock-Knock: CFU and Feedback Protocol
3-2-1 Knock-Knock Routine
- Use the 3−2−1 knock-knock sequence: say 3−2−1, then say "Who's there?" to elicit responses.
- After a response is shared, repeat the question and then select a 2-nd or non-volunteer to answer next; do not call the volunteer's name first to avoid bias.
- If no one responds initially, use the fallback: "That's OK. Can you listen to some other answers and I'll come back to you?"
- If needed, call on two other students to gather responses and then return to the original student.
Turn-Taking and Selecting a Non-Volunteer
- Always choose a non-volunteer first to encourage broader participation.
- After two non-responses or non-participation, cycle back to the original student after others have spoken.
Handling Responses and Feedback
- When a response is given, assess its accuracy:
- If partially correct: echo/repeat it back, or say it in a similar way; you may also say "fantastic".
- If partially correct: elaborate on why it is correct or provide a brief explanation.
- If not correct: briefly explain the error.
Encouraging an Error Culture and Next Steps
- Promote a culture that learning includes errors:
- If not quite right: say, "Not quite right. Let's hear another response."
- Repeat the question to the student who didn’t answer and invite them to respond.
- Offer a second path: allow them to choose from multiple options based on peers' responses.
CFU Threshold and Reteach Trigger
- Monitor for consecutive incorrect responses:
- If you receive 2 incorrect responses in a row, stop the CFU (checking for understanding) and reteach.
