  • Kingdom Fungi constitutes a unique group of heterotrophic organisms.

  • They exhibit high diversity in both morphology and habitat.

    • Edible mushrooms and toadstools.

    • White spots observed on mustard leaves, which are caused by a parasitic fungus (Albugo).

    • Unicellular forms, such as yeast (Saccharomyces), which are utilized in the production of bread and beer.

    • Pathogenic forms causing diseases in plants and animals, such as Puccinia, which causes wheat rust.

    • Sources of antibiotics, such as Penicillium.

  • Fungi are cosmopolitan, appearing in air, water, soil, and on both animals and plants.

  • Preferred environmental conditions for growth include warm and humid locations.

  • Food is kept in refrigerators specifically to prevent it from spoiling due to bacterial or fungal infections.

Structure and Morphology

  • With the exception of yeasts, which are unicellular, most fungi are filamentous.

  • The bodies of fungi consist of long, slender, thread-like structures known as hyphae.

  • The network of hyphae is referred to as a mycelium.

  • Hyphae are categorized based on their internal structure:

    • Coenocytic hyphae: These are continuous tubes filled with multinucleated cytoplasm.

    • Septate hyphae: These contain septae or cross-walls that divide the hyphae into individual cells.

  • The cell walls of fungi are primarily composed of chitin and polysaccharides.

Modes of Nutrition

  • Fungi are heterotrophic and obtain nutrients through various means:

    • Saprophytes: They absorb soluble organic matter from dead substrates.

    • Parasites: They depend on living plants and animals for survival.

    • Symbionts: They live in mutually beneficial associations.

      • Lichens: An association between fungi and algae.

      • Mycorrhiza: An association between fungi and the roots of higher plants.

Reproduction and Life Cycles

  • Reproduction in fungi occurs through vegetative, asexual, and sexual means:

    • Vegetative Reproduction: Includes fragmentation, fission, and budding.

    • Asexual Reproduction: Occurs via spores such as conidia, sporangiospores, or zoospores.

    • Sexual Reproduction: Occurs via oospores, ascospores, and basidiospores. These spores are produced in distinct structures called fruiting bodies.

  • The sexual cycle involves three primary steps:

    1. Plasmogamy: The fusion of protoplasms between two motile or non-motile gametes.

    2. Karyogamy: The fusion of two nuclei.

    3. Meiosis: Occurs in the zygote, resulting in the formation of haploid spores.

  • In some fungi, the fusion of two haploid cells immediately results in diploid cells (2n2n). However, in others (ascomycetes and basidiomycetes), an intervening dikaryotic stage (n+nn + n) occurs.

    • This condition, where there are two nuclei per cell, is called a dikaryon.

    • The phase of the fungus is referred to as the dikaryophase.

    • Later, the parental nuclei fuse, and the cells become diploid.

  • The fungi form fruiting bodies where reduction division occurs, leading to the formation of haploid spores.

Classification of Fungi

  • The kingdom is divided into various classes based on the morphology of the mycelium, the mode of spore formation, and the type of fruiting bodies.

Phycomycetes

  • Habitat: Members are found in aquatic habitats and on decaying wood in moist and damp places. They also exist as obligate parasites on plants.

  • Mycelium Structure: The mycelium is aseptate and coenocytic.

  • Reproduction:

    • Asexual reproduction takes place by zoospores (which are motile) or by aplanospores (which are non-motile).

    • These spores are produced endogenously within a sporangium.

    • A zygospore is formed by the fusion of two gametes.

    • Gametes may be isogamous (morphologically similar) or anisogamous/oogamous (morphologically dissimilar).

  • Common Examples:

    • Mucor

    • Rhizopus (commonly known as the bread mould)

    • Albugo (the parasitic fungus found on mustard)

Ascomycetes

  • Commonly known as sac-fungi.

  • Complexity: They are mostly multicellular (e.g., Penicillium), though rarely unicellular (e.g., yeast, Saccharomyces).

  • Nutrition: They are saprophytic, decomposers, parasitic, or coprophilous (meaning they grow on animal dung).
