Physical/Chemical Changes

Matter can be changed in two different ways ways: Physical Change and a Chemical Change

PHYSICAL CHANGE:

A change in the form or physical properties of a substance without a chemical reaction of the creation of a new substance

(Basically a change in shape, size or state without altering its chemical composition and no new substances is formed)

Example of a Physical Change: Solid ice undergoes a physical change when it melts into water by using heat. And then the water can be converted into steam when heat is also applied to water.

CHEMICAL CHANGE (also called Chemical Reaction):

A change of chemical composition or makeup of a substance. (Usually by a combining or subtracting certain elements)

Example of Chemical Change: Rusting, when an iron is left outside in the presence of oxygen and water, it undergoes a chemical change.

The iron atoms react with oxygen atoms to form a new substance called iron oxide or rust.
