5 types of chemical reactions:

1. synthesis/ Anabolic: building something large from smaller components

2. decomposition/ catabolic: breaking down something large into smaller components

3. reversible: reaction can go backwards from product to reactants

4. exchange: swapping of atoms by making and breaking bonds

5. oxidation reduction: transfer of electrons between atoms and molecules

oxidized: atom has lost an electron

reduced: atom gain an electron
