Branding & Themes
✅ Study Notes — Customize Your Okta Org: Branding & Themes
Branding in Okta allows organizations—including those with subsidiaries, global regions, or separate business units—to deliver tailored user experiences without needing multiple Okta tenants. This reduces:
Admin overhead
Cost
Complexity
User confusion
Branding applies across:
Sign-in pages
End-user dashboards
Error pages
Email notifications (activation, password reset, unlock, MFA, etc.)
Okta provides no-code branding directly in the Admin Console.
🎨 1. Okta Branding Begins with a Theme
A Theme is a collection of visual components applied across Okta-hosted user-facing pages.
A theme includes:
Logo
Recommend: landscape PNG, transparent background
Used on sign-in pages, dashboard, emails
Avoid square logos
Background Image
Applied to: sign-in pages and error pages
Primary Color
Used for:
Buttons
Email templates
Dashboard navigation
Secondary Color
Used as secondary background color
Favicon
Square icon used in browser tabs
🧩 2. Creating & Applying a Brand
Admin Console → Customization → Brands
Steps:
Click Create Brand
Name your brand
Click the brand to customize it
Configure theme components (logo, background, colors, favicon)
💻 3. Branding Okta-Hosted Pages
From the brand page → Pages Tab
You can customize:
Sign-In Page
Tabs available:
Page Design — visual look and feel
Labels — edit text like "Username" → “Login”
Settings — widget options
Draft changes show a yellow dot → must Publish to apply.
End-User Dashboard
Controls the dashboard theme applied after login
Error Pages
Branding consistency when login or system errors occur
📧 4. Branding Email Templates
Okta emails that support branding include:
Activation emails
Password reset
Account unlock
MFA enrollment/reset notifications
From the brand → Email Tab:
Admins can:
Edit audience
Choose language versions
Customize text or HTML
Preview using Send Test
Templates automatically inherit brand colors & logos.
🌍 5. Why Use Multiple Brands?
Useful for organizations that have:
Subsidiaries
Distinct business units
Different regions
Different logos and themes
Allows segmentation without separate Okta orgs.
🧠 Key Exam Concepts
The OCA exam expects you to know:
What elements belong to a theme
Where to configure branding (Customization → Brands)
What can be customized (logos, pages, email templates, labels, colors)
Themes must be published to take effect
Branding = visual changes; it does not impact authentication flow
Email templates support multiple languages
You can apply separate brands for different parts of the org
