APES Section 5 — Nutrients (Nitrogen & Phosphorus)




1) The Core Concept (Most Important)



Nutrients are substances like nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) that help plants and algae grow.


They are necessary for life — but too many nutrients cause pollution.

2) Eutrophication (Very Important — Expect Questions)



This is one of the most testable processes in APES.



The cause–effect chain:



Excess nutrients

→ Algal bloom

→ Algae die

→ Decomposition increases

→ Oxygen decreases

→ Fish die


Your packet explains that decomposition of dead algae consumes oxygen, leading to hypoxia (low dissolved oxygen) that can stress or kill aquatic organisms.
