Comprehensive Notes – Liturgy, Holy Spirit & Augustinian Insights
Septuagint Background & the Term Leitourgia
- Etymology: Greek laos (people) + ergon (work) → public service done on behalf of the people.
- Secular to Sacred shift in the Septuagint (LXX):
- Appears times in LXX.
- Designates the Levitical cult – a divine institution served by the priestly class.
- New-Testament usage:
- Occurs times.
- Applied to Christ’s sacrificial self-offering; He is the leitourgos (celebrant) of the heavenly sanctuary (esp. Heb 8–10).
- Early Christian writers:
- Didache: bishops & deacons share in the leitourgia of prophets/teachers.
- Apostolic Tradition: ordination is propter liturgiam (for the sake of worship).
- Eastern Churches still call the Eucharist “the Divine Liturgy.”
Christ the Eternal High-Priest
- Hebrews 5:1-5: every priest chosen from among men to offer sacrifice; Christ likewise called by God.
- Christ’s priesthood is eternal (Heb 7:24–25):
- Lives forever → possesses a permanent priesthood.
- "Able to save completely those who approach the Father through Him."
- Paschal Mystery (Passion, Death, Resurrection, Ascension) = the definitive priestly act.
Conciliar & Papal Definitions of Liturgy
- Mediator Dei 25 (Pius XII): “official, public worship of the Church” offered by Christ the Head & His members.
- Sacrosanctum Concilium 7: liturgy = “exercise of the priestly office of Jesus Christ… an action of Christ the Priest and His Body, the Church.”
- SC 10 / CCC 1074: liturgy is both “summit” & “fount” of Church life.
Theological Implications
- Central focus: celebration of the Paschal Mystery (especially in the Eucharist).
- Double movement:
- Heaven → Earth: we share in the heavenly liturgy.
- Earth → World: strengthened to witness & serve.
- Sacraments = sensible signs whereby Christ continues His priestly function, pouring out fruits of the Paschal Mystery.
Liturgy as Encounter & Revelation
- God meets humanity in three primary loci:
- Celebration of the Word (homily/lectio) — Scripture is constitutive.
- Celebration of the Sacraments — faith enacted, grace dispensed.
- Liturgy of the Hours — sanctifies time, leads to progressive participation in Christ’s mystery.
Spiritual & Pastoral Effects
- Nourishes faith, lifts minds to God, fosters gratitude.
- Cultivates daily Christian living & evangelizing witness.
Augustinian Witness — Sermon 228B (c. 418-420)
- Eucharist = true sacrifice, surpassing OT “shadows” (Col 2:17; Heb 10:1).
- Interior participation: what happens on the altar must happen in the heart.
- Exhortations:
- Avoid hypocrisy; align deeds with creed.
- Uphold unity of faith & practice; genuine religion demands inner transformation.
Lesson 2 Pedagogical Framework (University of San Agustin)
- Time-frame: week / hours.
- Outcomes: understand liturgy as Christ’s prayer, value celebrations, compose a commitment letter.
- Values: Unitas (friendship), Prayerfulness.
- Listening activity: Song “I Offer My Life” – relates self-offering to liturgical participation.
Holy Spirit – Titles & Gifts
- Scriptural Titles (CCC 692-693): Paraclete, Spirit of Truth, Spirit of Promise, Adoption, Christ, Lord, God, Glory.
- Isaiah 11:1-2 → sevenfold gift:

Augustine on the Spirit — Sermon 267 (Pentecost)

Essential Characteristics of Catholic Liturgy
- Trinitarian & Paschal – directed to the Father through the Son in the Spirit.
- Ecclesial – action of the whole Christ; ordered roles (priest, deacon, readers, musicians…).
- Sacramental & Symbolic – gestures, matter, words (light, water, bread, wine, cross…).
- Ethical Orientation – empowers moral life; worship ↔ discipleship.
- Eschatological – anticipates future Kingdom; realized/awaited tension.
Augustine on True Religion (City of God 8.17; De Vera Religione)
- Religio from relīgare = “to bind again” → reunion with God.
- True worship = service of the one immutable God; intermediary spirits (demons) unworthy.
- Platonic parallels: intelligible world ~ eternal Reason; yet only in Christ is salvation certain.
- True religion calms “commotions & tempests of the soul.”
