• Pirates were the greatest threat

  • Caribbean and Barbary coast

  • Barbary war (1801) was the first foreign soil military victory, ended with a treaty

• War of 1812

  • Territory battles with native American tribes

  • The UK helped these tribes

• Monroe Doctrine 1823 (Key to US foreign policy)

• Spanish American War 1898

  • By this time the US are a major power

  • US is looking to expand

  • Cubans were done being a colony of Spain

    • The US helps Cuba in exchange for trading business

• The US property over Philippines

  • Philippines provided opportunity in Asia for military and economic presence

  • The US holds Philippines for a while

• China “Open Door” Policy (1900)

  • China can be open to all countries
