History notes

Puritan movements

Puritan belied government should enforce more

They believed that it would cast punishment on all

Where also upset that the church welcomed most people

Thought it should be more difficult that to be a member of the church

Only certain people should be allowed into the church

The government gets annoyed and that its crazy to try and accosted those

The more radical break away and have their own worship services

Part of there religious believes they kept running it not political issues

James 1 try’s to rid the puritans by sending them off

Puritan settlement at Plymouth colony

There is a group of most radical know as separatist

Theses are the ones they must break away from the church and create a new one

And say they are the evil

They will be punished banned and persecuted by James the first

Some puritans including separatists becomes so upset they leave England and go to the Netherlands

They try to set up their perfect society

They choose this because more so then England their was more religious freedom in Netherlands

Netherlands leaders thought it was bad to try and control peoples religious beliefs

Pertains religiosity freedom wasn’t really what they where after

Part of their belivfswhere to force them around them

They get frustrated and get hostile to the Dutch religious

This brings frustrations

The government gets sick of them

A group of the puritans in neatherlands move to the new world into Virginian 1620

They called the ship the mayflower

Most get sick

The ship goes off route and miss virgian by the north

There is no settlement there so they just set up their one area

The established Massachusetts where they called Plymouth

Things start to fall apart they arrive to late to grow enough food

Half the ones died

The native Americans in the area helped the starting pilgrims

The Puritan and the native Americans celebrate the first harvest = thanks give is born

Puritan society develops

The Puritan set up a government that’s they agreed on the ship earlier called the mayflower compact

The mayflower government wasn’t to sanctioned by the crown

This could have been bad but the king had bigger issue

The puritans are left alone

By the time the crown can think about it they have grown big enough to where its hard to remove

Pertains will abstain a chapter particles due to the civil war

They wher e able to take advantage of the drama back home

Things not relatives to them kept the crown to not think about the colognes

Masacuseests and new Hamptur

The towns of Salem and bost where established

The bay colony

About 21,000 came over

Things went well after thanks giving

Things went well like life expedency

Lived for 70 years if they survived being a baby

New England grew much a fast them Chesapeake area

Religious freedom vs religious purity

Puritan camper to new ggnald seeking to get freedom but not freedom in the modern sense but to give authority in the religious purity

Sabbath began sunset on Saturday and went through hall day Sunday

Uncivil walking fined or whipped for

Confermined historicsl example sea captain voyage finally get to see his wife

He kisses his wife on his own porch

The man was put in jail for kissing his wife on Sunday

Church attendance was compulsory (mandatory)

If you didn’t you had to have legal excuse or you chould be whipped

Many town officials would force compliance on the rules

If you disagreed with them

Rodger Williams gets kicked out for challenging the church establishment

Persecution of the quakers

Massachusetts would imprint them and whipp them

Four of them where exacted in 1659 and 1661

Ran to escape the religious government but then made one the forced religious society

Eventually they put them to death over difference in interpretation

Quaker’s be lie no one should have a religious higher archy

The development of New England

From the bay colony server letter let’s move to surrounding places

They aren’t hard core enough or they are to harsh

Because of the land and the limit in New England is not as suited to large scale agriculture than in the south

There is no demand to bring in slaves

If the family’s are good and

Husbands requeierd submission buy wife’s and kids

Kids are supposed ot be 100 percents obedient and if the guy where they could be put to death by the father

Instead of a big organization these churches ever governing themselves

Giving them more control over local families

A little closer to democracy

Because most people wher property owns this enable they to develop a more democratic style gornemvent then in England and Virginia

Democracy doesn’t mean freedom it just mend wider disturbustion involved in the government

Religious divide grows

There were religious disagreement causing a new colony that was slight y diffrent religious beliefs

Whitchcrft trials

Salem

Women’s and fee men begins accused of witchcraft

Shame wtich trials

They were convencied they where pressed by or an instrument of the devil

People in the way

With lll the difference the most common was in order to grow communicate they had to take land by other

3 ways

  1. Buying land

  2. Moving in after natives where willed out by epadimic (was belived to be a gift by god)

  3. Simply starting wars with the plan to take land after war

Metacoms war

Certain colonies become done with the tactics being used against them

1675 there was a war beased on the realization on this method

Ended in in 600 colonists and a few thousand natives

Results in colonial resizes and a quicker exploit on in natives

Quakers and the establishment of Pennsylvania

They called themselves the society of friends

Unorthodox- a rare version that not many would follow

They ignored social class they treated women in church

They belived natives had right to land

They refused to fight in a war under any circumstances

Most new Englanders mocked them

Pennsyl was the home land

From mostly independent colonies to an empire

From the stat to 1660 they where able to rule themselves and trade how ever they wanted

They navigational acts strengthen And designed to insure the colonies where inriching engald and not letting others gain anything

Your man concer is your livly hood

They wanted to do it by their own interest

Anger back in England leafed to the glorious revolution in 1688

Matter to the colonies the transition loses the enforcement of the navigation acts

Busisineess grown due to navigation acts being not enforced

A lot of removing the governes that England out in pppalce A lot of optimism in the colonies

Expectations are better brighter further in the colonists

But England needs revenue

The old navigation acts where being enforced means less money y to England making the y losing more money then they where making

1696 there is an effortt to better prosecute to people not following the navigation acts

Part of the efforts involved vice-admiralty courts

Stopped jury

This strengthen the enforcement

Creates resentment and rebellion

Those who aren’t breaking it but they feel their rights are being thr by the actions of others

End of th e1600s the English h government expanse the efforts the gain more control over colonies

Parliament pass additions navigation acts

The board of trade

At the same time colonies Will retain the way politics is done

They have their own electives

They don’t overtake the local government

Widening difference between the colonies and Great Britain

England becomes part of Great Britain in 1707

In early 1700 several colonies are transitioned over to royal government

Therre is a congress but on top of that is a royal governer

Has power to veto or cancel if the congress comes u with a law they dont agree with

Locals asybles still had the power to tax their own people and not the royal government

Living in England is diffrent the n living in the colonies

  1. Colonies had more experience and colonies belived their lives wher better because of it

  2. British parloment back in Britain belived since thery protected and that they where subjects to the crown the colonies owed their loyalty to the crown

  3. Due to the diffrent ways the colonies and the biritish government at looking at the problem the colonies and the British government had several problems
