🇨🇳 ANCIENT CHINESE HISTORY

🏺 2. Shang Dynasty

Dates: c. 1600–1046 BCE

The Shang Dynasty was one of the earliest Chinese dynasties with strong archaeological evidence.

Archaeological Evidence

Archaeologists have discovered:

  • Oracle bones

  • Bronze weapons

  • Royal tombs

  • Palaces

  • Chariots

  • Pottery

  • Jade objects

These discoveries show that the Shang had an organized society, government, religion, military, and skilled craftsmen.

Oracle Bones 🦴

Oracle bones were usually animal bones or turtle shells used for divination.

Shang rulers and priests carved questions onto them about things such as:

  • Weather

  • Harvests

  • Wars

  • Health

  • Future events

The bones were heated, and the cracks were interpreted as answers from ancestors or spirits.

Importance: Oracle-bone inscriptions are among the earliest known forms of Chinese writing.

👑 3. Who Founded the Shang Dynasty?

🐉 5. Zhou Dynasty

Dates: c. 1046–256 BCE

The Zhou defeated the Shang and established their own dynasty.

One of their most important ideas was the:

☁ Mandate of Heaven

The Zhou believed that Heaven gave a ruler the right to govern.

However, the ruler had to govern well.

If a ruler became cruel or failed to protect the people, Heaven could withdraw its support.

This idea was used to explain why one dynasty could replace another.

Easy way to remember:

Good ruler → Heaven supports him 👑

Bad ruler → Heaven withdraws support → rebellion/replacement ⚔

👑 6. How Did the Zhou Rule China?

The Zhou initially divided their kingdom into territories.

The king gave land and authority to:

  • Family members

  • Nobles

  • Loyal supporters

These local rulers governed their own territories but were expected to support the Zhou king.

Over time, many local rulers became very powerful.

This eventually contributed to periods of warfare, including the Warring States period.
