Ethos, Pathos, and Logos – The Rhetorical Triangle

These are the three modes of persuasion used to convince an audience. Every strong argument, speech, or piece of writing uses them in some way.

  1. Ethos (Credibility/Authority)

    • Why should I trust you?

    • Appeals to the speaker’s credibility and character—it convinces the audience that the author is knowledgeable and trustworthy.

    • Relies on the character, ethical values, and reliability of the source to persuade the audience.

  2. Pathos (Emotion)

    • How do you make me feel something?

    • Appeals to emotion—uses vivid descriptions, personal stories, and strong language to create an emotional reaction.

  3. Logos (Logic/Reasoning)

    • Does this argument make sense?

    • Appeals to facts, logic, and reasoning to make a case. Uses examples, evidence, and sound arguments.
