Spanish 3 (h) Unit 3: El subjectivo and expresiones del subjectivo

The subjunctive form is To express doubt, uncertainty, emotions, requests, or impersonal expressions (a statement without a specific subject). Basically, it is referring to something that may or may not happen and the connotation (the person wants it to happen or not).

Basic conjugation:

-AR verb endings:

  • AR → A → E

(Using "hablar" as the base verb)

-ER/IR verb endings:

  • ER/IR → E/I → Both of them end up as A

(Using "correr" as the base verb)

Irregular Verb Conjugation:

  • Conocer (c → zc): Yo conozca, tú conozcas, él/ella conozca, nosotros/nosotras conozcamos, + ellos/ellas conozcan

  • Decir (e → i, c → g): Yo diga, tú digas, él/ella diga, nosotros digamos, + ellos/ellas digan

  • Buscar (c → qu): Yo busque, tú busques, él/ella busque, nosotros busquemos, + ellos/ellas busquen

  • Pagar (g → gu): Yo pague, tú pagues, él/ella paque, nosotros/nosotras paguemos, + ellos/ellas paguen

  • Cruzar (z → c): Yo cruce, tú cruces, él/ella cruce, nosotros/nosotras crucemos, + ellos/ellas crucen

**You can memories that Conocer (c → z) is the oposite change from Cruzar (z → c)**

  • Haber: Yo haya, tú hayas, él/ella haya, nosotros/nosotras hayamos, ellos/ellas hayan

  • Ir (in present tense form it is also “voy, vamos, ect.”): Yo vaya, tú vayas, él/ella vaya, nosotros/nosotras vayamos, + ellos/ellas vayan

  • Saber (b → p): Yo sepa, tú sepas, él sepa, nosotros/nosotras sepamos, + ellos/ellas sepan

  • Ser (keep the “E” and instead add the “A”) on): Yo sea, tú seas, él/ella sea, nosotros/nosotras seamos, + ellos/ellas sean

  • Hacer (c → g): yo haga, tú hagas, él/ella haga, nosotros/nosotras hagamos, + ellos/ellas hagan


Irregular yo and él/ella forms:

  • Dar: Yo dé + él/ella dé (yo and él/ella always match)

  • Estar: Yo esté + él/ella esté


Irregular nosotros forms (they do not have the stem change in the “nos” form):

  • Jugar (u → ue for all forms “yo juegue”): Nosotros/nosotras juguemos

  • Pensar (e → ie in all forms “yo piense”): Nosotros/nosotras pensemos

  • Entender (e → ie in all forms “yo entienda”): Nosotros/nosotras entendamos

  • Dormir (o → ue just like in present tense, for all forms “yo duerma”): Nosotros/nosotras durmamos
