Chapter 1

1.1 Matter and Energy:

  • Matter

  • Substance

  • States: solid, liquid, and gas

    • Which state of matter will the particles be the farthest apart from one another and why? Gas. This is because they have the greatest kinetic energy.

  • Atomic Scale

  • Macroscopic Scale

Kinetic Energy:

  • kinetic energy: energy of motion

    • moving particles

  • Temperature: measure of avg. kinetic energy of particles of matter.

  • Heat: heat goes from hot to cold.

Examples of Kinetic or Potential Energy:

Kinetic Energy;

  1. a man diving from a driving board.

POTENTIAL ENERGY:

  • Potential Energy: stored energy

    • the potential energy of its position or composition.

  • high potential energy: unstable

  • low potential energy: stable

  • Composition: the nature of particles of matter.

1.2 SYSTEMS OF MEASUREMENT:

  • SI = system of unit

  • English system: used in America

  • Metric System: used everywhere in the world

    • health care workers must know both

Base Units in the Metric System:
