Study Notes on Lipids and Dietary Fat Calculations
Lipids
Overview of Lipids
Lipids are a group of biological molecules that include fats, oils, and cholesterol, playing crucial roles in the body.
Dietary Fat
Energy Content:
Dietary fats provide 9 kcals/gram.
Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Range (AMDR) for Fats:
It is recommended that 20-35% of total daily kcal intake come from dietary fats.
Saturated Fat Recommendations:
It is advised that saturated fat constitutes less than 10% of total daily kcal intake.
Dietary Fat Calculations
Example Calculation with a 2000 Kcal/Day Diet
Calculating Total Fat Intake:
Minimum Fat Intake (20%):
Total Kcal from fats = 2000 kcals/day x 0.20 = 400 kcals/day from fats.
Grams of fat per day = 400 kcals per day / 9 kcals per gram = 44 grams/day.
Maximum Fat Intake (35%):
Total Kcal from fats = 2000 kcals/day x 0.35 = 700 kcals/day from fats.
Grams of fat per day = 700 kcals per day / 9 kcals per gram = 78 grams/day.
Saturated Fat Intake Calculation
Saturated Fat Intake (less than 10% of total Kcal):
Total Kcal from saturated fats = 2000 kcals/day x 0.10 = 200 kcals/day from saturated fats.
Grams of saturated fat per day = 200 kcals per day / 9 kcals per gram = less than 22 grams/day of saturated fat.
Summary of Key Calculations
For a 2000 kcal/day diet:
Total fat intake range: 44 grams – 78 grams/day.
Maximum saturated fat intake: < 22 grams/day.
