Infection Precautions Overview
Infection Precautions
Overview of CDC Guidelines
- The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) has established guidelines for infection control in healthcare settings, categorized into two levels of precaution:
- Standard Precautions
- Implemented for the care of all patients in hospitals and healthcare facilities.
- Aim to minimize the risk of transmission of infections.
- Transmission-Based Precautions
- Applied for specific diseases that require additional measures beyond standard precautions.
- Important for controlling the spread of known or suspected infections.
Purpose of Precautions
The primary goal of these precautions is to prevent the transmission of infectious organisms, which can occur through multiple routes:
- From Patients to Healthcare Personnel (HCPs)
- From HCPs to Patients
- From Patients to Other Patients
- From Healthcare Personnel and Patients to Individuals Outside of the Hospital
Effective implementation of these precautions is crucial for patient safety and public health.
