MODULE 1.1 - Sources of Values and Norms: Family, School, and Community
Values- can distinguish one person from another
teenagers can have issues in developing their values due to these things:
1st - clash between teacher’s independence and parent’s overprotection(family context)
parents only act out of love and care for us, that’s why they try to protect us anyway they can
but as a teenager, we start to feel the need to break away and figure things out for themselves
2nd - clash between social conventions and personal convictions(community context)
according to Kohlberg, a person is more likely to be strongly conditioned to act or do things by the group’s standards to satisfy the need to fit in and get along with the other group members
we can end up contradicting our values and principles when we follow along with a group
3rd - clash between Lasallian standards and other schools’ standards(school context)
adjusting to a new learning environment seems difficult since we are not used to the community
DLSU’s values are rooted in faith, service, communion. This is how La Sallians are being told apart.
Family: Cradle of Human Values
the overflowing and unconditional love only a family can selflessly give was personally received by Saint John Baptist De La Salle
as the oldest, he experienced on how to be role model in front of his siblings and has a lot of responsibilities as the oldest
School: Inculcator of Human Values
schools are designed to not only develop with special care in the intellectual abilities, but so to form the ability to judge rightly, to hand on the cultural legacy of previous generations, to foster a sense of values, to prepare for a professional life.
Community: Promoter of Human Values
Religion- often dictates one’s approach to life
Friends- humans strive on relationships and the friendships formed can significantly behavior and decision-making
Media- tech and creativity have led to numerous ways to express oneself as this can help express someone’s individuality
Nation- represents a collective identity shaped by shared social values
Influences how individuals engage with the community and the world at large
Commitment:
to your school, apply what you’ve learnt from education and make a positive impact
To the mass media, refrain by being mislead by it
To your family and friends, express your love to them sincerely
In the Philippines, we translate our social values into acts of social responsibility
To your Church community, empower your spirit with our religious beliefs for it will make you increase in your confidence in following God’s/believed religion
Summary:
we are shaped by the people who we live with
we have to be eclectic
we are not alone in our journey called life
