Raymond Cattel's 16 Personality Factor Trait Theory

  • influenced McCrae and Costa in developing the five factor model.

  • he defined personality as, it is something that predicts what a person would do in a situation.

  • he used factor analysis to come up with the 16 PF.

  • again, he used the words that describe a person’s personality, like what Allport does. However, the difference is how he turned it in questions. He gathered data using the questions.

Types of Data

  1. L data - based on observations of other people. from secondary source

  2. Q data - used to know the intended person. it is self-report. since it is self-report, the type of source is primary source (kung sino talaga ang tinatanong).

  3. T data - used to measure performance such as intelligence and speed in responding.

Classification of Traits

  • Source traits vs surface traits

  • Common traits vs unique traits

  • Temperament - how a person behaves

  • Motivation - the reason or why a person behave

  • Ability - how far or fast a person performs

Cattel’s stages of Personality Development

What is factor analysis?

  • one begins by making specific observations of individuals. they are quantified.

    • parang similar dito yung sinabi sa book that cattel used inductive method, in which there are no preconcieved statements yet. nag-observe muna siya before concluding a theory.

    • dito papasok sa factor analysis yung method of correlation/ factor loading.
