Sexual and Asexual Reproduction

Asexual Reproduction

  • Most single-celled organisms and some multicellular organisms reproduce asexually.
  • One parent produces one or more new organisms (offspring).
  • New organisms are identical to the parent.
  • Dividing by mitosis.
  • Forms:
    • Binary fission
    • Budding
    • Spore
    • Vegetative reproduction

Sexual reproduction

  • Most multicellular organisms reproduce sexually.
  • Two parents contribute genetic material.
  • Half genes come from each parent.
  • Fertilization: sperm and egg join.
  • When sperm and egg join, a zygote is formed.
  • Zygote is diploid.
  • Zygote develops into a child by mitosis.
