Wounds Complications
Complications of Wounds
Infections:
Infections complicate wounds, especially those involving the intestines, as they carry non-sterile items through the body.
Non-sterile items entering the abdomen can lead to severe complications.
Healthcare-Associated Infections:
Infections can spread within healthcare settings, necessitating monitoring in the 2-7 day post-injury window for infection signs.
Signs and Symptoms of Infection (S/S):
Look for purulent drainage, pain, redness, swelling, increased temperature, elevated white blood cell count, and delayed healing.
Immediate post-wound inflammatory responses may mimic infection, so continued monitoring is essential for identifying true infections.
Hemorrhage:
Excessive bleeding complicates wound healing by washing away clots and healing factors.
Applying pressure dressings can help achieve homeostasis, the crucial first stage of wound healing.
Document blood loss if hemorrhaging occurs.
Surgical Wound Management:
Do not remove dressings from new surgical wounds to maintain the site and prevent immediate complications.
