Types of Conflict

Man vs. Man- When two groups or people are fighting (The families feud, Tybalt vs. Mercutio, Romeo vs. Paris, Juliet vs. Her parents)

Man vs. Environment- When there are people against external forces (“the day is hot”, the plauge that is taking place)

Man vs. Self- An internal struggle (when related to Romeo and Juliet this could be impuslsive behaviors such as romeo drinking poison, them getting married very quickly, or Mercutio VS. Tybalt)

Plot Structure

Introduction- Sets the scene like a Prolouge of a story (The 14 line sonnet delivered by the chorus setting the scene in Verona there is a long standing fued and star crossed lovers)

Exciting Force- The enciting moment (The meeting of Romeo and Juliet at the party Romeo shifts his obsession from Rosaline to Juliet)

Rising Action- The actions that lead up to the Climax (They meet and realize their families are eniemies tension builds between secret encounters like tha balcony scene and their marrage)

Climax- The most dramatic action of a story (the street duel and Mercutio dies Romio kills Tybalt and is Romeo gets banished)

Falling Action- Tension decreases and loose ends are tied up leading to the resolution (Juliet is engaged to Paris, Friar Laurence potion plan, The miscomunication where Friar John failes to deliver the fake death letter and Romeo drinks poison)

Resolution- (The families reconcile after knowing their children are dead and the Prince yells at the parents for their hatered causing 6 dealths)

Setting

Time’s significance to the plot- (it all takes place in 4-6 days which causes reckless and impulsive decisions and Romeo arrives just moments before Juliet wakes up)

Place’s significance to the plot- (Romeo is banished to Manchua after being banished from Verona and causes more chaos while trying to sneek into Verona to visit Juliet on different occasinos)

Theme

What possible themes does the play have? Theme is the key idea that runs theorugh the story (love, conflict, family, fueds bring tradgedy)

Characterization What do the following details tell you about a character?

Actions- What characters do and say (Romeo marries the daughter of his enemy)

Dialogue- What a character says usually in quotations (_)

Feelings- intense emotions (greif, sadness, love)

What others say about the character- (passionate but reckless, brave but rebelious, impulsive, innocent, obedeient)

Figurative Language

Metaphor- Comparing two thing without using “like” or “as” (Juliet is the sun)

Simile- Comparing two thing while using “like” or “as” (My bounty is as boundless as the sea)

Personification- Giving a non-human thing human traits (Arise fair sun and kill the envious moon)

Hyperbole- An exaggeration (The brightness of her cheek would shame those stars)

Allusion- A refrence to something famous (Gallop apace you firey foot steges twoards phoebes lodging)

Sound Devices

Alliteration- Consonant sounds that repeat at the beginning of words (From forth the fatal loinds of these two foes)

Assonance- Vowel sounds that repeat anywhere in the word (O Romeo O Romeo wherefore art thou Romeo)

Consonance- Consonant sound that repeat in words at the ends or middle of the word (What art thou drawn among these heartless hinds)

Onomatopoeia- Words that make sounds (Will you pluck your sword)

Irony

Situational irony- supise twist (when romeo kills himself because he thinks Juliet is dead)

Dramatic irony- reader knows something character dosent (for example juliet dosent die)

Verbal irony- when you say one thing but mean another (when Juliet says that she hated Romio but was plannng to marry him)
