used with reflexive pronouns to indicate that the subject is performing the action on itself
action of the verb is reflected back on the person doing the action
reflexive verbs require reflexive pronouns
- je me lave → I’m washing myself
- je lave la voiture → I’m washing the car
require conjugation according to the subject pronoun

when using reflexive verbs in sentences, remember to conjugate the verb (using regular -er verb conjugation)
- Ex: se laver

1. Je me lave 2. Tu te laves 3. Il/elle se lave 4. Nous nous lavons 5. Vous vous lavez 6. Ils/Elles se lavent

Don’t use a possessive pronoun (pronoun right before object)
- Ex: Je me lave la figure
- La is the possessive pronoun in the sentence above
to make them negative, put the ne … pas around the verb and the pronoun
- Ex: je ne me maquille pas.
se lever and se promener are stem changers
- add accent to certain subjects when these reflexive verbs are conjugated
- je me lève, tu te lèves, il/elle se lève, nous nous levons, vous vous levez, ils/elles lèvent
- je me promène, tu te promènes, il/elle se promène, nous nous promenons, vous vous promenez, ils/elles promènent
in sentences with two verbs, the first verb is conjugated and the second verb will stay an infinitif
- the reflexive verb is before the second verb
- Ex: je vais me brosser les dents
