The Internet as the Town Square

  • Quote: "The Internet is becoming the town square for the global village of tomorrow." — Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft.

From Traditional Media to Digital Media

  • Traditional to digital transitions:

    • Print flyers and brochures → Interactive electronic direct mailers with clickable hyperlinks

Digital Media Communication Platforms

  • Four primary platforms: Websites, Mobile Apps, Blogs, Social Media

Websites

  • Purpose: Introduce essential business information such as products and services, contact information, etc.

  • Created using web-authoring tools such as WordPress, Wix, and Weebly.

  • Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) helps bring visitors to websites through search engines such as Google.

  • Example note: Adidas and Apple websites are known for a good blend of design and user-friendliness (form and function).

Blogs

  • Usually incorporated within websites.

  • Contain content/topics relevant to the target audience on a more personal level.

  • Used widely in businesses to reflect brand personality and connect with the audience in a more intimate and timely fashion.

  • Example notes:

    • Local wedding photographer Wan Sheng shares experiences and favourite moments, giving an intimate glance into their work.

    • Award-winning photographer Joe McNally writes anecdotes from journeys/projects, offering advice for photographers at various levels.

Mobile Apps

  • Software designed to run on mobile devices (smartphones, tablets, smartwatches).

Application to Problem (Case Context)

  • Problem: Ethan relies on traditional methods to spread his message; not effective.

  • Objective: Embrace digital media to reach a broader audience more effectively.

Digital Media vs. Traditional Media (Problem Context)

  • What is Digital Media: content exchanged over the Internet every day (websites, blogs, social media, mobile apps).

  • It includes: websites, blogs, social media, mobile apps.

  • It enables more flexible communication, virtual communities, increased interactivity, and better audience engagement for businesses.

Audience Analysis (Ethan’s Case)

  • Target audience: young adults and teens.

  • These groups are unlikely to read physical/print copies of The Straits Times.

  • Print advertising is less effective for this demographic.

  • Geographic constraints: standing outside Woodlands MRT station limits reach to a single location; not 24/7.

  • Posters pasted at lift landings near MRT are location-limited and may be missed if people are rushing.

Why Digital Media is More Effective (Case Reasons)

  • Flexibility: content can be amended quickly online as needed.

  • Community building: creates feedback loops with the target audience to improve products/services.

  • Interactivity: enables active engagement between Ethan and the audience.

  • Reach and efficiency: word-of-mouth spread through social sharing expands reach.

Using Digital Media to Communicate More Effectively (Strategies)

  • Establish an online presence with a company website containing essential business information.

  • Use a blog to update topics of interest to the target audience.

  • Employ mobile apps to increase interactivity and ease of day-to-day functions with the audience.

  • Leverage social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) to engage audiences.

Using Websites (Ethan’s Bubble Tea Shop Case)

  • A website can establish presence and brand identity for the bubble tea shop (example mentions Tiger Sugar North Point and related content).

  • Websites provide menus, store information, and product details; they open communication channels with customers.

  • Real-world examples included in slides show flavor descriptions, store information, and online ordering prompts.

Using Blogs (Ethan’s Blog Strategy)

  • A blog hosted on the shop’s website can include updates on events and topics relevant to teenagers and young adults.

  • Example topics: bubble tea tasting events, trending flavors, stories about how tea leaves are processed.

Using Mobile Apps (Ethan’s App Strategy)

  • Target audience (younger users) tend to prefer mobile usage.

  • An app can push content to reach this audience and enable direct purchases of bubble tea.

  • Features: loyalty points, exclusive deals, promotions, and easy ordering.

Using Social Media (Ethan’s Social Strategy)

  • Social networks (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) enable quick spread of information via virtual word-of-mouth.

  • Use content that engages audiences and builds a sense of community.

  • YouTube can host longer video content that complements short-form posts:

    • Tips and tricks (e.g., sugar level guidance, how bubble tea is made).

Conclusion

  • Digital media encompasses audio-visual content and applications distributed over the Internet and/or electronic devices.

  • Includes digital video contents (movies, TV shows), digital music (downloads or streaming), digital games, and electronically published content (eBooks, articles).

  • Platforms include websites, blogs, social media, and mobile apps.

  • Digital media is more flexible, supports virtual communities, increases interactivity, and helps businesses engage better with consumers and audiences. In addition, it allows for targeted advertising and analytics, enabling marketers to reach specific demographics effectively and measure the performance of their campaigns in real-time.
