You should write an essay of 2000 words in response to one of the essay
questions listed below. For further guidance on the format and submission of
the essay see the module canvas page.
Assignment Deadline: 12 January 2026 by 12 noon (UK time)
Answer one of the questions below in relation to AT LEAST TWO
ethnographic readings.
1. “We polish an animal mirror to look for ourselves” (Haraway 1991: 21).

2. “We eat meat, not animals.” Discuss.
3. Are we what we wear?
4. Is exchange more than things?
5. What does it mean to be related?
6. Is love ultimately about knowledge?
7. Are cultural definitions of citizenship exclusionary?
8. Borders are a “process” as much as a “product” (Wilson, Donnan 2012:
14). Discuss.
9. How is globalisation shaped from below?
NB: Essays submitted later than the deadline will incur a penalty of 5
marks per working day (12 noon is the end of a working day for these
purposes). Penalties will also be applied if you go more than 100 words
above the word limit of 2000 words. This word limit includes quotations,
references, and footnotes, but not your bibliography.
