How Our Brain Processes Information
Dual Processing (Two Modes of Thought)
Our brain utilizes two distinct modes of information processing, which vary depending on the situation.
Fast vs. Slow Thinking: Refers to the speed at which judgments are made or information is processed.
Reflexive vs. Reflective Thinking: Distinguishes between automatic, spontaneous thoughts and those requiring conscious, deliberate consideration.
Mental Shortcuts vs. Thoughtful Deliberation: Contrasts the use of simplified rules or heuristics with in-depth analysis.
Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM)
The ELM proposes two different routes to persuasion: Central and Peripheral.
These routes represent the two extreme ends of an "elaboration continuum," meaning people can process information with varying degrees of cognitive effort.
They are qualitatively different modes of information processing, not just different amounts of the same kind of processing.
The specific route taken depends significantly on the degree of an individual's involvement in the issue or message.
Central vs. Peripheral Processing
Central Processing: Associated with making decisions using one's brain, implying careful thought and analysis.
Peripheral Processing: Associated with making decisions based on one's gut feeling, implying less effortful and more immediate reactions.
Central Processing (High Involvement Decisions)
The central route is inherently reflective, demanding significant mental effort and relying heavily on cognitive elaboration.
For central processing to occur, two conditions are crucial:
Motivation (Willingness) to Process a Message: The individual must be interested and willing to expend mental energy on the topic.
Ability to Process (Understand) a Message: The individual must possess the cognitive capacity and background knowledge to comprehend the information presented.
Example: Lulu is car shopping.
She actively seeks out information comparing safety ratings, reliability, performance metrics, customer satisfaction reports, mileage efficiency, and depreciation rates for three different makes of sporty cars.
She meticulously scrutinizes this detailed information before arriving at a final decision, demonstrating high involvement and cognitive elaboration.
Peripheral Processing (Low Involvement Decisions)
The peripheral route is reflexive and is based on the use of mental shortcuts rather than deep analysis.
It relies on various cues:
Credibility Cues: Such as the perceived trustworthiness or expertise of the source.
Appearance Cues: Visual elements like attractiveness or presentation quality.
Quantity of Arguments: The sheer number of arguments presented, regardless of their individual strength.
Heuristic Cues (Decision Rules): These are simplified rules for making decisions and simplifying the thought process, e.g., "experts are always right," or "more arguments mean a stronger case."
Example: Brand/endorsement shopping.
A shopper chooses to purchase a specific brand of perfume primarily because the design of the bottle "looks fancy," using an appearance cue.
A consumer decides to try a new product because they admire the celebrity who endorses it, relying on a credibility/likability heuristic.
Persistence of Persuasion
The Role of Involvement:
High involvement significantly increases the likelihood that a person will engage in central processing.
Conversely, low involvement tends to steer an individual towards peripheral processing.
High involvement also decreases reliance on credibility, which is typically a peripheral cue, as the individual is more focused on the message's content.
Durability of Persuasion:
Persuasion achieved via the central route tends to be more lasting and enduring, as it's based on strong arguments and deep cognitive engagement.
Persuasion achieved via the peripheral route, relying on superficial cues and shortcuts, tends to be more transitory and less resistant to counter-persuasion.
The Elaboration Likelihood Model Class Activity
The model is often explored through practical exercises, such as class activities, to solidify understanding of its application in real-world scenarios.
