Depression and League of Nations

Depression caused a number of events to happen that made the League’s work very difficult:

  • countries wanted to trade, and needed new markets and raw materials- often through colonisation e.g Japan through Manchuria.
  • People lost their jobs and often turned to extreme parties who were often nationalist in nature e.g nazis
  • These parties are usually militaristic and built up their armed forces.
  • League members lacked the money to deal with aggressors.
  • There was a reluctance to impose economic sanctions as countries wanted to maintain existing trade relationships.
