Research Study: Gender Differences in Romantic Solicitation

  • Study Conducted by Clark and Pat Fields

    • Participants: Five women and four men acted as confederates in a research setup.

    • Objective: Investigate how gender influences responses to romantic solicitations.

    • Confederates varied in attractiveness to see if it impacted response rates.

    • Participants were unaware of the confederates’ involvement in the research.

  • Procedure

    • Confederates approached individuals at office desks asking one of three randomly assigned questions:

    1. "Would you go out with me tonight?"

    2. "Would you come over to my apartment tonight?"

    3. "Would you go to bed with me tonight?"

    • Purpose: Measure responsiveness based on the questions without focusing on attractiveness.

  • Findings

    • Date Proposal:

    • Female participants: 56% agreed to go on a date.

    • Male participants: 50% agreed to go on a date.

    • Apartment Proposal:

    • Female participants: 6% agreed to come to a stranger's apartment.

    • Male participants: 69% agreed to come to a stranger's apartment.

    • Bed Proposal:

    • Female participants: 0% agreed to go to bed with a stranger.

    • Male participants: 75% agreed to go to bed with a stranger.

  • Analysis of Results

    • Notably, attractiveness did not affect willingness to respond to requests (i.e., being more attractive did not guarantee more positive responses).

    • Men's willingness to engage in less committed relationships is highlighted by their higher acceptance of sexual invitations compared to women.

    • Women tended to prioritize relationships that appear less committed and said "no" to more casual advances.

  • Research Questions Recap

    • Would you go on a date with me tonight?

    • Would you come to my apartment tonight?

    • Would you go to bed with me tonight?

  • Conclusion & Dialogue

    • Summarized findings emphasized pronounced gender differences in relation to romantic encounters and relationships.
