Research Study: Gender Differences in Romantic Solicitation
Study Conducted by Clark and Pat Fields
Participants: Five women and four men acted as confederates in a research setup.
Objective: Investigate how gender influences responses to romantic solicitations.
Confederates varied in attractiveness to see if it impacted response rates.
Participants were unaware of the confederates’ involvement in the research.
Procedure
Confederates approached individuals at office desks asking one of three randomly assigned questions:
"Would you go out with me tonight?"
"Would you come over to my apartment tonight?"
"Would you go to bed with me tonight?"
Purpose: Measure responsiveness based on the questions without focusing on attractiveness.
Findings
Date Proposal:
Female participants: 56% agreed to go on a date.
Male participants: 50% agreed to go on a date.
Apartment Proposal:
Female participants: 6% agreed to come to a stranger's apartment.
Male participants: 69% agreed to come to a stranger's apartment.
Bed Proposal:
Female participants: 0% agreed to go to bed with a stranger.
Male participants: 75% agreed to go to bed with a stranger.
Analysis of Results
Notably, attractiveness did not affect willingness to respond to requests (i.e., being more attractive did not guarantee more positive responses).
Men's willingness to engage in less committed relationships is highlighted by their higher acceptance of sexual invitations compared to women.
Women tended to prioritize relationships that appear less committed and said "no" to more casual advances.
Research Questions Recap
Would you go on a date with me tonight?
Would you come to my apartment tonight?
Would you go to bed with me tonight?
