Philosophical Roots of Psychology

  • Plato and Nativism: Plato investigated the fundamental question, "How does the mind gain knowledge?" He proposed the concept of Nativism, which posits that knowledge is innate and present from birth. Under this view, individuals are born already possessing specific knowledge.

  • Aristotle and Empiricism: A student of Plato, Aristotle offered a differing perspective known as Empiricism. This theory suggests that knowledge is not innate but is instead acquired through sensory experience and interaction with the world.

  • Rene Descartes and Dualism: Descartes questioned the nature of reality with the inquiry, "Are our perceptions reality?" He is associated with Dualism, also referred to as the mind-body problem. This philosophy asserts that the mind is fundamentally different from the physical body and that they are not composed of the same substance, raising the question of how the two entities communicate.

  • George Berkeley and Perception: Berkeley studied stimuli, which are defined as things in the environment that can be sensed. He argued that perception is relative rather than absolute; for example, our perception of water temperature depends on the context of the observer.

Phrenology and Early Brain Examination

  • Franz Joseph Gall and Phrenology: Gall developed phrenology, a theory suggesting that the shape of an individual's skull determines their personality traits.

  • Scientific Status: Phrenology is classified as a pseudoscience. While it sounds scientific, it lacks empirical data to support its claims.

  • Practical Usage and Impact: Historically, phrenology was used to justify social and personal biases. However, the movement led to more frequent brain dissections and physical examinations of the brain.

The Emergence of Experimental Psychology

  • The Scientific Method: This approach involves the pursuit of knowledge through systematic and controlled observations, precise measurements, and the formulation of testable hypotheses.

  • Hermann von Helmholtz: Helmholtz focused on physiological processes, specifically measuring the speed of nerve impulses. He utilized empirical testing to evaluate items previously considered "common knowledge" by measuring human reaction times.

  • Wilhelm Wundt: Recognized as the "father of psychology," Wundt established the first laboratory dedicated specifically to physiological psychology in 18791879 at the University of Leipzig.

The Origins of Clinical Psychology and Hysteria

  • Early Clinical Practice: In the 1800s1800s, clinicians began focusing on the treatment of mental disorders.

  • Diagnosis of Hysteria: Hysteria was a frequent diagnosis during this era. Its symptoms were broad and varied, including anxiety, fainting, emotional agitation, and fluctuations in sexual desire (ranging from an excessive desire for sex to a complete lack of interest).

  • Etymology and Gender Bias: The term is derived from the word "hyster," meaning uterus or womb. Because doctors believed the condition was tied to the uterus, they would sometimes perform a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) on women who expressed a desire for sex as a way to treat their perceived hysteria.

  • Current Status: Hysteria is no longer recognized as a formal medical diagnosis.

  • Hypnosis: This was viewed as an altered state of mind or a trance. Scientists of the time believed hypnosis could open the mind, allowing clinicians to observe the inner workings of the brain more clearly.

Freud’s Psychoanalytic Theory

  • Sigmund Freud: Freud worked extensively with patients diagnosed with hysteria. His theories centered on the significance of childhood experiences and the power of the unconscious mind.

  • Psychoanalysis: This was the method Freud developed to uncover unconscious distress, often employing hypnosis as a tool in the process.

  • Carl Jung and Dream Analysis: Jung, a contemporary of Freud, proposed that elements appearing in dreams are significant and should be analyzed. Jung eventually challenged Freud's ideas, which Freud did not tolerate well. This conflict led to Freud working in isolation for a period.

Critical Evaluation of Freudian Theory

  • Lack of Peer Review: Because Freud worked in isolation from other psychologists, he was not open to peer review, which is a modern standard for improving scientific theories.

  • Non-falsifiability: Many of Freud’s theories are considered non-falsifiable because they cannot be empirically tested and therefore cannot be proven false.

  • Problems with Hypnosis: Patients under hypnosis are often highly susceptible to suggestion, which can compromise the validity of the information gathered.

  • Gender Theories: Freud’s work is often criticized for being anti-women. One example is his theory of "penis envy," which hypothesized that every girl, between the ages of 88 and 99, must realize they do not have a penis. Freud believed that if a girl does not successfully navigate this realization, she will grow up to be envious of men; if she does, she will develop normally.

  • Scientific Validity: Freud did not utilize the scientific method in his research.

  • Lasting Contributions: Despite the criticisms, Freud is credited with correctly identifying the importance of the unconscious and subconscious minds. He also noted that human memories are not perfect, as two people can experience the same event, such as a movie, and remember it differently.

Behaviorism and the Black Box Problem

  • The Black Box Problem: This concept describes the difficulty of studying cognition because internal thoughts cannot be seen from the outside. To understand what someone is thinking, researchers must rely on that person to tell them.

  • Challenges of Cognition: Cognition is difficult to study because it does not involve directly observable behavior.

  • Rise of Behaviorism: Led by John Watson and B.F. Skinner, the school of behaviorism emerged as a reaction to this problem. Behaviorists advocated for a focus solely on objectively observable behavior, ignoring internal mental states that could not be measured directly.
