The teaching mainly have to do with how people should relate to god and one another. Value scholarship and learning, “ People of the Book.”

Slide 2-3: Hebrew Bible

Common sets of teaching that express God’s will as carried out in humans events. The basis of the christian Old testament, but in a different order.

Divided into three sections: The Torah, The Profits, the Writing

Slide 4: The Torah

The first five books of the Hebrew Bible. Tells of The world and the first people. Tells The account of Noah and the great flood, The covenant between Abraham and God. Also called the Laws of Moses.

Slide 5: The Prophets

Prophet: A person believed to be chosen by god as a messenger to bring truth to people.

They were preachers, poets and reformers.Told people how they should relate to god, other lands and themselves.

Slide 6: The Writing

Psalms: Poems or songs offering praise or prayers to god.

Chronicles: Book that provides a history of early Jewish people

Includes Hebrew literature, such as Psalms. Book of proverbs. Wise saying to give advice

Slide 7: Importance of law and learning

Commentaries: A set of comments recorded discussion about something.

Rabbis: Jewish religious teachers. Recorded oral laws they believed to come from Moses.

Talmud: Text of oral Teaching about The hebrew Bible and jewish laws

Ethical Monotheism

There is only one god who sets rules between right and wrong.

Righteousness: Living in a way that is ethically right.

Individual: A single person

Observance of law,

The laws and rules are seen as a covenant with god.

Laws are equally applied to every person.

Women were given additional rights as compared to previous religions. Permitted to buy and sell land. The right to consult who they marry. The right to take cases to court.

Early History of Jewish People

As turmoil came, the Jewish people would rely on judges to lead them.

Judges: means a leader who rallied the Israelite’s to defend their land.

They were generally warriors or prophets

Saul and Deborah

Saul was a judge who became the first king of Israel.

Deborah was a prophet who led the Israelite’s into battle.

She was the only female judge on record.

David

David was a shepherd and musician.

He was also one Saul’s best fighters.

David became king after Saul He made Jerusalem the capital.

Solomon

Solomon ruled after David He commissioned the great First Temple

Commission: To order the creation of.

The kingdom Divides

Solomon’s Descendants ruled the kingdom of Judah in the south.

A rival ruled the kingdom of Israel in the north.

Babylonian Captivity.

The Babylonians, ruled by Nebuchadnezzar, Took thousands from their homeland to babylon. 587 BCE. They lived in exile for about 50 years

Exile: Separation from one ‘ s homeland.

Cryus the great allowed them to return home around 538 BCE

They would rebuile their homeland and built the second temple in 515 BCE.

They would later build a wall around jerusalem.

Diaspora

Diaspora: Dispersion or scattering.

As ther people were freed, they disperved throughout the Fertile Cresent. Those living ourside of the Land of Isreal were known as Diaspora

New ways to worship.

Diaspora brought about many changes. Being far away the homelad they had to create synagogues .
Synagogue A meeting place.
