• offset lithography = a printing technique that revolutionized book production by allowing for faster and cheaper printing, enabling mass distribution

• dime novels = low-cost novels

• pulp novels = inexpensive fiction

• paperback books = affordable and more accessible formats of literature

CULTURAL VALUE OF BOOKS

• social infrastructure = physical space that shapes the way people interact

  • aliteracy = ability to read but choose not to

• CONVERGENCE: e-readers, audiobooks

  • cottage industry = small-scale production of goods

    • imprints = distinctive marks made by a publisher to identify their books

    • subsidiary rights = rights given by author to exploit the book’s content

    • tie-in novels = written to accompany a film/show
