1947 partition between India and Pakistan was the wrong, long-term solution to the political tensions of British India,

 

“Imagine waking up and finding out that your neighbour who you had known for 20 years was now your enemy and the city you were raised and born in is now a foreign country.”

 

 

 

Argument 1/ Pathos =

 

Destroyed centuries of peaceful coexistence and caused rivalry – evidence, Muslims + Hindus were living together peacefully for years.

 

 

Families were split apart overnight by the Radcliffe Line, it was drawn by a British lawyer who had never even visited India before.

4 major wars between India & Pakistan

Separation of Bangladesh (‘71)

Continuous oppression of Kashmiris (mainly in Ind)

 

Widespread and violent riots killing around 1m and displacing 14m

 

Billions are spent on defence and borders that could be used on recourses

 

 

Argument 3/ Ethos =

 

1946 Cabinet Mission Plan) It proposed dividing United India into 3 areas with a lot of independence, the Muslims accepted this, till the congress disagreed and wanted a stronger, central government, after this, the plan collapsed.

 

This model has worked for multiple countries and regions (Switzerland, Canada and the European Union)

 

 

 

Counterargument =

 

 

Religion didn’t tear two communities apart. The evidence for this is the fact that Muslims, Hindus and other religions had been living together peacefully for centuries (and continue to do so out of India and Pakistan) political tension and British lines tore them apart.

Did the partition actually make people safer? It killed and displaced millions and was a full civil war, causing riots and violence on a massive scale

The partition didn’t only cause Muslims to suffer, it was a disaster for all three religions, Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs all suffered and were killed.

 

 

Rebuttal =

 

Independence and thriving countries are great, but you can’t ignore the catastrophic cost, 15 million suffered, it has caused ongoing political tension and wars.

 

 

 

 

Closing =

 

In conclusion, the Partition should not be judged by immediate advantages but what happens years later, and its long-term effects and its result can be seen even in Pakistan India relations today
