Caring for a Jackson-Pratt/Hemo-vac Drain

• emptied every 4-8 hours or when half full

1. bed at working height and trash can within range

2. place water-proof pad under drain

3. empty fluid into small, cylinder container.

4. use gauze to clean outlet

5. compress chamber again and recap the outlet secure drain onto patient’s clothes on the inside. make sure there is no tension on the tubing

6. measure drainage and describe color and character. (discard according to facility policy)

7. clean wound site with normal saline on gauze while wearing gloves
